Event Description: 

Athletes over 50 years old can compete in three competitive cycling events. The event is comprised of a 5K individual time trial, a 10K individual time trial, and a 20K mass start road race. St. Charles Golden Games competition information can be found here. 

Event Basics:

  • Save the Date! Thursday morning, May 4th, 2023
  • Start/Finish Area, Registration and Parking @ The Lake St. Louis Community Association Clubhouse.
  • Start Times:
    • 7:30am: Registration Opens
    • 8:30am: 5K Time Trial Start
    • 9:00am: 10K Time Trial Start
    • 10:00am: 20K Mass Start Road Race Start

Road Race Competitive Divisions and Rules: 

  1. The Road Race is an individual age category competition which divided into both men and women divisions. 
  2. Each participant will ride the 20K distance.
  3. The Road Race will be a mass start event with approximately 10 minute intervals by age division and gender. Based on attendance fields may be combined.
  4. Riders must stay to the right when overtaking another rider. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
  5. This is a "rules of the road" event, please obey all regular traffic regulations. Athletes DO NOT have the right of way.

Time Trial Competitive Divisions and Rules:

  1. Each rider will ride a 5K and/or 10K Time Trial.
  2. Starting times for the Time Trial will be at equal intervals, usually 1 minute, but no less than 30 seconds. No allowances will be made for mechanical or other mishaps.
  3. Starting order is by random selection.
  4. Riders may be held by an official holder at the start, but shall be neither restrained or pushed.
  5. No rider may take pace (draft) behind another rider closer that 80 feet ahead or 7 feet to the side. A rider who is observed taking pace (drafting) shall receive a time penalty.
  6. In the 'home stretch' the leaders must ride in a straight line, parallel the course.
  7. Crashes: The effect of a crash will be decided by the Event Coordinator, who will have the option of stopping the race (with subsequent restart) or allow the race to continue.
  8. Mechanical Failure: The rider must remove his/her bicycle from the course as quickly as possible.
  9. Riders must stay to the right except when overtaking another rider. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
  10. No restarts are permitted.
  11. If in doubt of your qualification, check for an official furling from the chief referee before your appointed start time. Once the clock begins, your time is running and will not be adjusted.
  12. Mechanical failure- The rider must remove his/her bicycle from the course as quickly as possible.
  13. This is a "rules of the road" event, please obey all regular traffic regulations. Athletes DO NOT have the right of way.
  14. Giving food or water to participants while competing is forbidden. Splashing with water is allowed.

Scoring:

  1. Awards will be given to first, second, and third place in each age division.
  2. In case of a tie, duplicate medals will be awarded.
  3. Winners will be awarded and receive in each age category below the gold, silver, and bronze medals. 
    1. 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95+

Equipment Rules:

  1. Participants must provide their own bicycle and protective helmet. The helmet is mandatory and must conform to USA Cycling regulations.
  2. Multi-gear, "free wheel," bicycles with front and rear brakes are required. Fixed gear, electric assist, and recumbent bicycles will not be permitted. All bicycles must be certified by race officials prior to competition.
  3. There may be no protective shield , faring, or other device on any part of the bicycle (including, but not limited to, the frame, wheels, handlebars, chain wheel or accessories) that has the effect of reducing air resistance except those allowed by USA Cycling regulations. Aero bar extensions are not permitted in the road race.

Officials:

  1. USA Cycling rules will prevail. Any circumstances not covered in the rules will be ruled upon by the Event Coordinator.
