2021 Vann Knight Tuesday Night World Championship Criterium Training Series 3/16/21 to 8/31/21

Covid Safety Guidelines:

  •  All athletes will have to check-in at our Covid Screening each day for temperature check, questionnaire, and contact tracing log. You will be given a wrist band after you have been cleared to race. Covid Screening Questionaire PDF
  • Masks must be always worn at the event. You may take your mask off immediately prior to racing in the start chute. Masks must cover your mouth and nose.
  • There ill be no gathering at the start/finish area. This includes friends, family members, and teammates.
  • Failure to adhere to the race guidelines will lead to disqualification and removal from the event.
  • Please enter and depart the course away from the start/finish area before and after racing.
  • Team tents will not be allowed near the start/finish area or race registration footprint.
  • Event staff, volunteers, and officials will be required to always wear masks during the event.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available.
  • There will be no congregation of racers or fans at the finish line, officiating tent, or registration tent.
  • No team tents will be allowed in the parking lot or along the course.
  • Racers who are pre-riding the course will have to wear masks.
  • Pre-event and race-day registration will be ONLINE ONLY. You can register race day on BikeReg.
  • Prize money will be mailed post event.
  • There will be no on-site protest period.
  • Riders will be staged 6' apart at the start. We will have a much wider start chute than normal to allow for social distancing.
  • Race standings will NOT be published and available at the park but will be available online.
  • Participants will be instructed to leave the park after the completion of their race.
  • We ask that all athletes depart the venue after racing, please do not bring fans, family, or spectators. We have been given permission to hold these races provided ALL racers, friends, and spectators understand that we MUST abide by these rules. This means- team tents, tailgating, and gathering is not allowed.
  • Our staff will ask participants and fans attending the event to observe these guidelines. You will only be asked one time.
  • There will not be neutral support/wheel pit at this time. We will update this decision closer to the event.

Protocols and procedures may be modified if state or local regulations are changed before or during the series.

When: Tuesdays March 16 - August 31, 2021

What: Criteriums are a mass start bicycle racing format that is extremely popular in the US, especially in Carondelet Park.

Why: Criterium racing is terrific for improving speed, tactics, positioning, handling, and fitness.

How it Works: Each race lasts a specified duration plus 3 laps with the final lap signalled by the ringing of a bell.

Race Information:

Most evenings there are four races: A, B, C and Juniors U-18.

  • The "A Race" will be for USA Cycling Category 1, 2, and 3 licensed racers.
  • The "B Race" will be for USA Cycling Category 4 licensed Men, Category 1/2/3 licensed Women, and Masters 40+ Category 1/2/3 Men.
  • The "C" Race will be for USA Cycling Category 5 Men, Category 4/5 Women, and 1 Day License Holders.
  • The "Juniors" Race will be for Under 18 Boys Category 4/5, Under 18 Girls Category 4/5, and 1 day license holders. Racing Age for Juniors is defined as being under 18 prior to 12/31 of the current year.

Pre-Race Clinics: These will hopefully return for the 2022 season.

The Course: is a wide open .7 mile loop with a fast downhill turn + a bit of elevation gain.  Pavement quality is near perfect and corners are very safe.

The Perfunctory Stipulation: In exchange for usage of the course, the City of St Louis requests that we simply respect the Park and the residents of the adjacent neighborhood. 

Parking: The area will be available as close to 5:30 pm as possible. Please do not park blocking the one-way access loop on the west side of the course/park.

EARLY Number Pick up Saturday, March 13th

Register early for the first race, purchase a Season Pass and get your cloth bib number early on Saturday March 13th from 2pm until 5pm at Big Shark's Big Bend store.

Please have these items with you, completely filled out and ready to go:
1. USA Cycling Series Waiver.
2. USA Cycling Current License
3. Payment - Credit card Only- Online through Bike Reg (made payable to Big Shark Bicycle Company)

Registration:  Online Only - on site will be possible via www.bikereg.com and opens around 5:00 pm each Tuesday.  Registration closes 30 seconds prior to the start of each race. Numbers issued are for the entire series- so hang on to your bib number!

Race Fees are as follows:

  • Entry fee is $15.
  • Your 2nd race on the same night: $3
  • Fees include a $5 per rider insurance surcharge/BAR fee.
  • Replacement bib numbers: $5
  • Season Pass- before March 16th, purchase all 25 races for $340. This includes a 2nd race on the same night. Normally $450. Season Pass holders must check in each evening at the registration tent.
  • The Junior Race (Starting 5/4/21): $12

Important!  ALL participants must have a current year USA Cycling license (1-Day and Annuals are available on site).  Riders must report to registration each evening to be included on the start list. Please don't be THAT racer.

Fine Print:

  • The "A,"B" and "C" races will each have one 'open' prime.
  • The "B" and "C" races will each have one women's prime.
  • The "C" race starts at 5:30pm March 16 -  April 26. Beginning on May 4th this race will be at 7:40pm.
  • The Juniors races at 5:30pm begins on May 4th.
